04.29.2011…….Finding Formulas Fast!

Bob postsAre you tired of feeling like you are playing BINGO while tracking down the cells that compose a formula in your spreadsheet?  Well, you’re going to love this tip!  It is called Trace Precedents and Trace Dependents.  The next time you play Sherlock Holmes and track down the cells in a formula use Trace Precedents.  Here is how to do it for excel 2007.

  • Step 1 Click on the cell with the formula you are trying to unravel
  • Step 2 Click on the “Formulas” Tab
  • Step 3 Click on Trace Precedents under the Formula Auditing group
  • Step 4 Watch the magic!

Open Track Formulas the Easy Way  to see this exciting feature in action!  Cell E4 is your starting point for Step 1.

Now that you are a master of the Trace Precedents you can go the reverse direction by clicking on Trace Dependents.  For example click on cell C30 and learn what cells are impacted when Steve find more squirrels scheming!

For those of you with excel 2003, you can find the trace function under:

  •  Tools
  • Formula Auditing
  • Trace Precedents
